4 Living x Fatima
Tobi is a dreamer, to say the least. He created 4 LIVING, a brand to inspire people to chase their own dreams.
I made friends with Tobi on a surfing trip in Lakey Peak, Sumbawa. He’s also living in Byron Bay, so we kinda knew each other from surfing around. I remember one specific day of the trip, waking up to the thunder-like sound of A-frames barreling in the distance, waiting for the first light to show up and the tide to fill in a bit.
I was a bit scared, to be honest. My surfing abilities are still far from being comfortable on those conditions. Still, I paddled out, hoping I could score a decent one. First thing I encounter myself once I got to the peak is Tobi screaming like a madman, air dropping into an intimidating set wave. That’s Tobi. He just goes, no hesitation. And it made me smile, and try to go on the one behind him, cause I was fired up.
Soon we started talking about making things together, and so we got to work. Back home I gave him an asym prototype I’ve made for testing, which he connected with straight away. It was an interesting process cause he’s never ridden another board in his life than a performance thruster. So I was keen to make him something that would hook him into surfing different type of boards, but still perform to his level.
The first assignment was making a 4 Living x Fatima surfboard quiver for the first 4 Living trip to the Mentawaiis. We ended up with 3 completely different boards, aiming to cover every possible condition. A 5’6 snub nose modern fish, a 5’9 performance wing swallow tail, and a 6’2 step up; all twin fins.
He scored some epic waves, and got some positive feedback from the boards. Safe to say he’s been almost exclusively riding twinnies lately. After some further discussions and feedback, we decided to establish 3 board models, available to order through 4Living.
The boards will be CNC cut, based off the original Mentawaiis handshaped quiver, with the added later modifications; made with the purpose of reaching more people and make them feel something different in their surfing.
Here’s the Mentawaii trip movie if you’re keen to see how the boards went.
